Constraint is a kind of care

We talk about constraints like they are something done to us. The budget is too small. The timeline is too short. The team is too lean.

But a constraint is just a decision about what matters, made in advance. When you cannot do everything, you are forced to choose the thing that counts. That is not a loss. That is the whole job.

The work I am proudest of came out of rooms where I could not buy my way out of the problem. No extra headcount, no extra month. Just the question, asked honestly: what actually has to be true here?

Limits make you answer that question. Unlimited options let you avoid it forever. Choosing your constraints is how you care about the outcome enough to protect it from your own good intentions.
